Overview

HappyKosher is a food delivery marketplace for kosher restaurants and their customers in New York. Customers order on iPhone, Android or the web, with every restaurant’s kosher certification on show. Restaurants run their orders, menus and earnings from their own app, and the HappyKosher team runs the marketplace from an admin panel.

We are HappyKosher’s entire product and engineering team. In 2026 we moved the business onto a new, self-hosted platform, bringing its existing customers and order history with it, and we have built and shipped every product since: four products, one backend, and the integrations that connect them to restaurants’ kitchens, couriers and payments.

4 products

customer app, restaurant app, web ordering and admin, on one backend

Live

on the App Store, Google Play and happykosher.app

3 integrations

restaurant POS through Stream, couriers through Cartwheel, payments through Stripe

The challenge

A delivery marketplace is four products that have to agree with each other. The price a customer sees on the web has to match the app, the kitchen has to get the order the moment it’s paid for, and the courier’s progress has to reach the customer’s phone.

HappyKosher also had to fit how its restaurants already work. Some run their menus and kitchens on a point-of-sale system, deliveries go out through third-party courier fleets, and in a close-knit community every repeat order counts.

Platforms

Customers order on any of these. Restaurants run their side from their own app, and the HappyKosher team from the admin panel.

Inside the app

Twenty screens across the four products: the customer app, the restaurant app, ordering on the web and the admin panel. Tap any screen for a closer look.

How we approached it

We treated HappyKosher as one system with four front doors, and shipped it in small, reversible releases, each with its own backups, checks and rollback plan.

Start from proven ground. Instead of building a marketplace from zero, we started from a licensed multi-restaurant platform and made it HappyKosher’s own: rebranded and upgraded every app, self-hosted it on AWS, and imported existing customers and orders with a rollback for every import.

Restaurants keep their POS. Through Stream, a restaurant connects its point-of-sale system once. Its menu syncs into HappyKosher, orders go straight to the kitchen, and when it pauses or disconnects in Stream, HappyKosher shows it as closed.

Tracking you can trust. Deliveries are dispatched to courier fleets through Cartwheel, and the courier’s own pickup and drop-off times appear on the home screen and the web. iPhone Live Activities, which bring the order to the Lock Screen, are rolling out now.

Rewards that bring people back. Every completed order earns loyalty points, with bonuses on a customer’s first orders. Points turn into Happy Cash for the next order, customers see what an order will earn while it’s on its way, and a referral rewards both friends once the new customer has ordered.

Checkout without friction. Saved cards through Stripe for one-tap checkout, the Happy Cash wallet and cash on delivery, with delivery fees set by zone and distance so the app and the web always quote the same price.

Problems found before customers notice. The admin panel tracks every integration failure, from a menu sync or delivery quote to a missing tax rate or a failed webhook, by severity and restaurant, and alerts the team.
