Overview

Almost nobody enjoys studying for the driving theory test — it's a wall of rules you cram once and forget. Autosaurus borrows the trick that made language apps stick: turn revision into a game you actually want to open. Streaks, hearts, gems, leagues and a friendly dino mascot sit on top of the real question bank, so the studying happens almost as a side effect of playing.

The challenge

Gamification is easy to bolt on badly — points that mean nothing, a mascot that grates, streaks that feel like a chore. The challenge was to make the game layer genuinely motivating without ever getting in the way of the actual learning, because at the end of it someone still has to walk into a test centre and pass.

It also had to hold up under real stakes. The questions mirror the official exam, so the fun couldn't come at the cost of accuracy — a wrong-but-fun answer is worse than useless when your licence is on the line.

How we approached it

We built the loop around momentum. A daily streak and a limited pool of hearts give each session a gentle sense of stakes; XP, leagues and leaderboards turn solo studying into a quiet competition with friends. Levels carry playful names like 'Jurasic Roundabout' so progress feels like a journey rather than a to-do list.

The standout is live race mode: you and other learners answer the same theory questions in real time, your little cars pulling ahead as you get them right. It takes the loneliest part of exam prep and makes it social — and competitive enough that people run 'one more round' without noticing.

Around that sits the economy that keeps a free app sustainable: a gem store, streak freezes, and a Premium tier for unlimited hearts and a special badge. The mascot ties it together, reacting to right answers and nudging you back when your streak is at risk.
